Wish this had worked for me... I have now have a currupted word doc. I dont have the options other than "open" in the drop down box. Only bought the laptop I use 2 years ago has windows XP, so dont understand why its not there.

Yes, it works ! And it works fine. Word did not allow to open my .doc file and show the message "the document name or path is not valid WORD". I've try to found solution on MS support site, run a .doc "repair" tool (and lost all formating !), and so on ... Thank for your help !

you really saved the day , i was spending time to try and recover the header of the file , tried also a couple of crap programms claiming they could restore corrupted word , and this trick worked like a charm , the only thing that was not revored were the hyperlinks , were the problem lied i suppose. thanks again for this tip :)

Hi, Thnx for the info about the 'open and repair' method in Office. It helped my girlfriend reapir an importent document. Fyi, this doesn't always work, sometimes the documents formatting is so screwed up that Word can't repair it. But it's always worth trying.

I tried it; it didn't appear to change the result, unfortunately. I have a document that won't print - the printer complains that tray 1 has the wrong size or orientation of paper. Of course it does! I get the same error whether I tell it to auto select the paper source or whether I explicitly tell it to take from a tray that definitely does contain the correct size and orientation of paper. Ho hum. I hate Microsoft, for all sorts of reasons just like this one...

That method to fix corrupted documents is not undocumented... When you try to open a corrupt document with office 2003 you get an error message with a "Show Help" button. That button shows the required steps to fix it. Of course when i used it, it ate a chunk of my word document wich is why i am still looking for answers on the interweb.

This may work for small corruptions, but it did not work on my document. The document contains corrupted styles and numbering, track changes, and was 90 pages long--three minuses for Word docs as a whole.

Your page comes up third in a Google search for "fix word document." The first two are commercial solutions whose demos didn't work. This one worked like a charm. I fixed a word document that it took my boss's boss three *straight* days of work to make. It was an audit of our entire office. Needless to say, they're quite happy with the result. Thanks!

Didn't work for me, as I have XP Home Version (without "Open and Repair" option). HOWEVER.... I tried something else, which *did* work! I right-clicked on the document directly, chose "Open With", and selected WordPad instead of Word. This did successfully open the document (in "Rich Text Format" [but who cares], and I was able to copy and paste it to a new document. Hopefully this will help some others...

It worked for me! Word kept saying "Path not valid" (typical Micro$oft error message that has nothing to do with the real problem). "Open & Repair" got it back. Of course, I won't continue to work on the file, but instead cut & paste its new work into a stable, older revision. I trust MS about as far as I can throw them. Thanks.

Good info. it did work except that there were portions that did not repair. The document was from a template so the attributes of the template, ie lines. boxex etc did not repair but the wording, spaces between paras etc did work. Thankyou for the info.

The "Open and Repair" a Word document did not work for me. There is no "Open and Repair" on the "open" menu as shown on your web site. It would be interesting to know what version of Word you show. I have Word 2000 version 9.0.2720.

Hi there, had I not found your site, I would have never known that option existed :) Thanks! In any case, I still have a problem that even this does not seem to fix. In some documents, when I paste an image or create a text box within a n outline,numbered list, etc while in Print View, Word 2002 starts to go wild repaginating, generating new blank pages until it crashes (unless Esc is pressed to cancel the process and revert to Normal View.) I have "Open and Repair"ed the document's template, and the document itself, but to no avail. Some other information was available at word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm but I still cannot fix this problem. The only way around it AFAIK is to insert a page break such that the image can be pasted without causing any text to wrap to a new page.

An idea for lesson 5: I'd like to be able to have the database confirm the existance of an entry in a textbox. That is, I'd write some text in a box and press a button, the program would then tell me if the entry exists or not. Another point I'd like to see, is to select an item in the first listbox, and have its corresponding item in a second listbox be selected/highlighted automatically. Final point, you say to email you with ideas for future lessons, but I cannot locate your email address.

I performed the instructions you indicated on my document, it seemed to highlight the corruptions that existed but then failed to repair them. Hello. I'd just like to say your tutorial was very confusing and overall not very helpful. It just jumps around telling me to do all sorts of random things without even attempting to explain how whatever function you're having me use works or the subrountines of it. You need to disect each code or atleast the more complicated ones and actually explain how basic properties in VB work.

Yes, it worked for me in that it gave me access, but then each time I saved the file it would not open again until I selected all, copied and pasted into a fresh document. I found your site by google. You saved me DAYS of work!

Thankyou very much. I went to MS home and tried many searches on repairing word docs and there was no mention that word can do it for you! Tried downloading trial repair progs but they fill the recovered doc with DEMO DEMO and other useless annoying crap. I am a student and many of my old docs saved to floppy have been corrupted so this is really incredibly helpful (floppy's are no longer being used, USB only from now on ;) )Thanks again word guru. recovery did not work for me. I have documents that were recovered from a drive that had been re-partitioned. When word opens them it says the document name or path is not valid. Same result using the open and repair.

I love the tutorials here but have run into a small problem. I tried tutorial 4 and got stuck on the "Dim dbMyDB as Database" declaration. It gets an error that it doesn't recognize database. Any thoughts? I'm probably missing a refrence somewere.

Thanks. I noticed this routine listed on the help list on MS Word, but I couldn't see where to find the "open and repair" tab! They failed to mention the location of the tab (not surprising, is it). Mind you, I was in a state fit to be tied, so I wasn't at my best. Anyway, this routine did manage to fix my Word XP document, all but one table within - whereas using the standard "repair" function that pops up when Word is trying to recover a file, did not. Thanks again.
